Dragon Tattoo- A Review

Print PDF

I've just finished reading The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. I am trying to concentrate on SciFi because I want to have a feel for the Hugo awards coming up next year and participate to some extent with them, but this was given to me for a birthday present. The book was set up like a detective novel. I liked the way it methodically laid out the problem in a time line and relationship tree. The rich dynasty was a bit of a clique and the covered up secret was perhaps, too. The current shocker for our time. I lament often that we have to have something more and more icky to get reader's attention. All it seems to be is drugs and sadistic sex. I am ready for something else.

I liked the main characters and had no trouble with hating the adversaries. It was a bit rough, not my normal cup of tea, but the detective aspect of it helped with that. The way the author described the day to day life around the investigation in an idyllic location- a cottage on an island. The pace slowly escalated until there was danger all around. When the Girl showed up and saved the day with a golf club, I was cheering. What a spunky gal. Goes to show you what even a small woman can do and why weapons are more essential for them than anyone, it evens the playing field. Doesn't make them superior, necessarily, but gives them a fighting chance. Without that, there often is no chance, especially for someone like this.

I would recommend this book, with the warning about the sadism. It seems the next book has it (from the preview) so it is the author's theme. The fact that the Girl fights back is the redeeming feature.
